Elsha Leventis  February 4th - 17th

Karen works on reclaimed wood, using a fresco technique that involves the use of stain, oil and acrylics, applied to wet and dried plaster. She uses tools, once the surface is dry, to scrap the surface and allow the character of the wood to show through. Layers of colour and depth impact each piece once a thin layer of non-yellowing epoxy resin is applied as a finish.

Elsha works using a limited palette, often ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, she works wet into wet, laying down washes of diluted oils on Mylar. Negative space is as important as the positive space as she plays back and forth between them to find just the right tension. She then drops in more pigments mixed with medium, which disperse the paint, or subtracts paint to capture light effects such as spots and rays.

Laurie Skantzos  February 18th - March 6th

Laurie ‘s painting style has evolved towards deeply layered abstracts and semi-abstracts.  She incorporates a wide variety of materials and media in her work. Japanese paper and tissues, powdered pigments, lino block printing, acrylic paint and oil sticks are some of her favorites.

Laurie’s process is fairly intuitive, at turns building up and scaling back,  and usually working on several pieces at the same time.  Lately, strange urban “ landscapes” have been emerging and co-existing among lush organics. A quote from The Little Prince - “what is essential is invisible to the eye” – has been rolling around the back of her mind lately and she’s been wrestling with that thought…attempting to make the invisible visible…

Lucille Weber  March 5th - 19th

Lucille grew up in rural Bruce County surrounded by the beauty of the countryside, always observing and absorbing the colours, textures and forms. This inspiring landscape led her to take courses in fashion and interior design followed by her desire to create on canvas, a natural progression for this artist. Lucille works intuitively allowing images to appear as she builds up layers of paint, scratches back and wipes off to create texture using a varied array of materials and tools.

This creates an atmosphere of a partially told story so that people can arrive at their own conclusions using her clues and their own experiences.

Meredith Bingham  March 5th - 19th

Meredith’s work comes from the intuitive, the irrational and the accidental in the creation of a work of art.  The idea of building up and breaking down colour and form until it becomes recognizable and “feels” complete.  Once it is finished she believes in letting the art stand on its own as an object of interest in its own right not as a representation of something else.

Celia Sage  April 1st  - 14th

Through her paintings Celia aspires to draw attention to the beauty and mystery of daily life and surroundings. She believes that the weight of a shadow, the tilt of a gesture, the depth of a hue can suggest to the viewer a world of meaning and possibility.

Also, Celia just loves to paint.

Richard Herman  April 1st  - 14th

Richard is a self taught artist who began experimenting with oil painting in his early teens.  Having a strong interest in western art history, he initially learned his craft by studying the paintings of the northern European Renaissance.  Seeking to recreate the crisp form and transparent atmosphere seen in panels by artists such as Jan Van Eyck and Rogier Van Der Wyden, he worked out the basic technique of that period, then applied it to his own themes.  This technique involved laying successive layers of tinted glaze over high contrast monochrome underpainting.  Compositions were based on detailed drawings made from a combination of direct observation and memory.  After working with figure based allegorical scenes in this way for several years, the landscape elements in his paintings came forward as the main subject of his work.

Tanya Kirouac  April 15th  - 29th

Tanya is an encaustic painter, deeply rooted in the visual language of landscapes and the natural world. Similar to the way nature builds up and washes away what it creates, she applies and removes layers of wax. Possibilities which had yet to be discovered rise and make themselves apparent. This process allows her to develop complex images in relief. Encaustic has an inherent opacity. This quality creates transparency which mirrors the fragility of our world. These transparencies give the completed works an almost dreamlike finish. A reminder of the possibility that the objects of her inspiration can be fleeting and might one day exist only in her memory.

Ann Shier  April 15th  - 29th

Ann is an accomplished Toronto-based artist specializing in encaustic painting, an art form that involves stirring pigments into molten wax and then applying it to the surface of the support. Her studies in fine arts, combined with her work as a potter and formal training as a graphic artist, influence her encaustic work. Over the past five years, Ann has left her artistic imprint on a wide range of spaces, including private collections in Canada, the United States and the UK.

Amanda Reeves  April 30th  -  May 14th

The apparent simplicity of these paintings belies the subtle intricacies of palette and composition.  The tonal shifts and variant sizes of the circle elements create overlapping and integrated layers of space.  The circles recede from or burst out of the picture plane, creating echoes and shadows of each other.  As the eye moves around the painting, the resultant after-images begin to multiply.   The ghost circles slide in and out of the peripheral vision of the viewer, increasing the layering and complexity of the piece, thereby intensifying the perceptual experience of the viewer.

Kathleen Weich  April 30th  -  May 14th

This group of paintings is based on the abstract notions of landscape. Using a conceptual approach rather than representing a more traditional landscape, I am able to take more liberties with the subject matter, colour and paint. Taking from city and rural images whether imagined or real, I use different views as a tool for composition. This gives me the space to use colour.

I love colour and never tire of the drama it lends itself to. The emotion attached to colour is a major part of my work. It is always fascinating how we react to pure colour and combinations.

My aim is not to present a finalized view of a given subject. I hope to offer a place where you can contemplate and bring your own visions.

Nancy Joy Wilson  May 15th  -  May 31st

Though her expressive compositions and strong use of colour, she uniquely presents the many personalities of the Canadian landscape. Her work is full of emotion and the sometimes animated reality nature impresses upon us.

William McCarthy  June 1st  -  15th

Each of these luminous and mysterious images of trees against sky, field, and river evoke a subtle variation of light and atmosphere. The arrangement of the trees - whether standing in solitude or in pairs or in large groupings seem at once inevitable and yet surprising, formal yet accidental. All of these paintings are comprised from memory, imagination and thumbnail sketches.

Sheila Davis  June 1st  -  15th

Sheila paints the landscape as she sees it– not as a physical likeness, but as an entire presence, involving the space of emotion, spirituality, temperature and the senses.

She finds she is inspired by the energy and play of textures where surface planes meet. A joining of forces, where colour and temperature meld or clash for dominance.  A battle of the elements, Earth, Sky, Water and all they encompass.

She works quickly and vigorously laying in colour and value with large dynamic brushstrokes. She attempts to portray what first excites her, causes the rush of adrenalin and the urge to ‘get it down’ before the feeling dissipates...
